US Revises Antitrust Remedies Against Google

By Yogi Patel

According to The Guardian, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has revised its proposed antitrust remedies against Google, now advocating for the divestiture of its Chrome browser. This move follows a federal court ruling that found Google illegally maintained a monopoly over search services. The DOJ argues that separating Chrome from Google’s search business would help restore competition in the digital marketplace.

In addition to recommending the sale of Chrome, AP News reports that the DOJ seeks to prohibit Google from paying third parties—such as Apple—to make Google Search the default engine on their devices. The government is also pushing for restrictions on Google’s ability to prioritize its own services, such as YouTube, in search results. These measures are aimed at curbing Google’s influence over search and online advertising while fostering greater market competition.

Google has strongly opposed the proposed remedies, arguing that such actions could disrupt its ecosystem and ultimately harm consumers. The Guardian notes that the company plans to appeal the court’s ruling, setting the stage for a lengthy legal battle. Google maintains that its integrations provide better user experiences and that breaking up its services could weaken U.S. tech competitiveness on a global scale.
