Federal Funding From Columbia University Withdrawn

By Yogi Patel

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the Trump administration has announced the cancellation of approximately $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University, citing the institution’s alleged failure to address persistent antisemitic harassment on campus. This decision marks the first round of funding withdrawals, with additional cancellations anticipated. Federal agencies assert that Columbia’s inaction violates civil rights laws, which require institutions to combat discrimination to remain eligible for government funding.

The Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Education, and the General Services Administration collectively determined that Columbia’s response to reported incidents failed to meet federal compliance standards. The U.S. Department of Education further stated that Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized the necessity for universities to enforce anti-discrimination policies, underscoring that federal support is contingent upon adherence to civil rights obligations. The withdrawal of grants signals the administration’s commitment to enforcing stricter oversight on universities regarding campus safety and inclusivity.

Columbia University, which holds over $5 billion in active federal grants, is reviewing the decision and engaging with federal officials in an attempt to restore funding. The Columbia Spectator reports that Interim President Katrina Armstrong has acknowledged the gravity of the situation, reiterating the university’s commitment to addressing antisemitism and protecting student safety. Columbia leadership is expected to respond with policy adjustments and compliance measures to mitigate further financial and reputational damage.
