DOJ Investigates Surge In Egg Prices

By Yogi Patel

According to Politico, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched an investigation into the dramatic rise in egg prices, probing whether major producers have engaged in price-fixing or supply restrictions. The inquiry targets leading egg producers, including Cal-Maine Foods and Rose Acre Farms, amid growing concerns over potential anticompetitive behavior. Federal regulators are examining whether these companies unlawfully manipulated market conditions to drive up prices.

Egg prices have surged significantly in recent months, with Politico reporting that the average cost of a dozen large, grade-A eggs reached $4.95 in January 2025—a record high. This increase has led to product rationing in some grocery stores and heightened scrutiny from both regulators and consumer advocacy groups. The DOJ’s investigation will assess whether price hikes were solely due to external factors, such as supply chain disruptions and avian flu outbreaks, or if collusion played a role.

The Wall Street Journal reports that investigators are reviewing communications between egg producers, retailers, and price-tracking firms to determine whether coordinated efforts contributed to price manipulation. The probe follows the worst avian flu outbreak in U.S. history, which has resulted in the loss of more than 150 million commercial poultry since 2022.

As the investigation unfolds, businesses should remain vigilant about regulatory compliance and fair market practices.
