Alec Baldwin and Involuntary Manslaughter in the Workplace

In recent news, the actor Alec Baldwin is expected to be charged with involuntary manslaughter for the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of the movie “Rust”.

Involuntary manslaughter is a crime that can occur in the workplace when an employee's actions or neglect result in the death of another person. Here are a few examples of co-workers being charged with involuntary manslaughter in the workplace:

In 2012, a coal mine foreman and a safety supervisor were charged with involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of 29 miners in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia.

In 2013, a construction company and three of its employees were charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of a construction worker who was struck by a falling steel beam.

In 2019, two oil refinery workers were charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a fire at the refinery that resulted in the deaths of five workers.

In 2018, a truck driver was charged with involuntary manslaughter for causing a fatal accident while working for a transportation company, due to negligent driving under the influence of drugs.

Workplace safety is paramount. Employers should make sure that the appropriate policies and procedures are in place and sufficient training is provided.
